How reliable is Frontier? Denver works, Atlanta does not

Frontier ran 72.7% on time from September 2025 to August 2026, rank 12 of 14. It beats the airport average at Denver and falls far behind it at Atlanta and Philadelphia.

Frontier Airlines ran 72.7% of its flights on time from September 2025 to August 2026, rank 12 of 14 US carriers. That number hides two different airlines. At Denver, its home base, Frontier's departures beat the airport's own average of 76.6%. At Atlanta, its second-largest station, the airport ran 77.9% and Frontier's departures ran more than ten points worse.

The low-cost carriers guide sets Frontier beside Spirit and Allegiant. This guide stays with Frontier: which of its flights work, which do not, and why.

Frontier cancelled 2.05% of its scheduled flights, close to the national 1.89% and far below Spirit at 4.52%. On cancellations, Frontier is an ordinary airline.

Its long delays are the problem. 11.2% of Frontier's flights arrived an hour or more late, against 8.3% nationally, and 41.0% of its late flights crossed the hour. They averaged 84 minutes behind schedule, against 73 minutes for all US flights. When Frontier is late, it is usually late enough to matter.

That tail share is the figure I look at first for Frontier, more than the headline rate, because an hour is roughly where a missed connection or a missed evening starts.

Why Frontier's delays run long

Late-arriving aircraft account for 52% of Frontier's delay minutes, against 40% nationally, among the highest shares of any carrier. Frontier's model is high aircraft utilisation: each aircraft flies as many hours a day as the schedule allows, with short turns and few spares. That keeps fares low. It also means a delay on the first leg has nowhere to go but the second, and with no spare aircraft waiting at the next station, the delay compounds until the aircraft sits overnight.

Frontier also flies late. A larger share of its schedule departs after 8pm than the national schedule does, including red-eyes and late-evening departures. Those flights ran 65.0% on time. The red-eye guide explains why overnight flights behave differently.

The early-morning window is weaker than other airlines' too. Between 5am and 8am Frontier ran 84.2% on time; the lowest figure in that window among the 14 carriers was Frontier Airlines's 84.2%, against 89.3% for all US flights. For most airlines the first wave is clean because its aircraft spent the night on the ground. An airline that flies its aircraft into the small hours has fewer truly fresh departures, which is consistent with Frontier's dawn figure. By 5pm to 8pm it was down to 64.1%.

Frontier's western bases run well. At Denver, Phoenix, Orlando and Dallas-Fort Worth, its departures ran at or above the airport's average, and at Las Vegas close to it. Frontier's best busy routes mostly touch Denver: Denver to Salt Lake City, Phoenix to Denver and Las Vegas to Denver. The Denver to Salt Lake City route ran 78.2% for all carriers, and Frontier held its own against the network airlines on it.

These routes start or end at the base where Frontier likely keeps most of its spare aircraft, crews and maintenance, and they fly between airports where the weather rarely closes a runway for long.

Atlanta and the East

Atlanta is the opposite. Frontier's Atlanta departures were the least punctual of any of its bases, falling to their worst in the late evening, when Frontier runs its largest wave out of the city. The Atlanta to LaGuardia route is Frontier's worst busy route, and it ran far behind Delta on the same route. The Atlanta to Orlando, Atlanta to Philadelphia and Atlanta to Baltimore routes are also near the bottom of its list.

Philadelphia is similar. The airport ran 75.2% and Frontier's departures ran well below it. On the Philadelphia to Orlando route, one of Frontier's busiest, it trailed American on the same flights.

The data does not say exactly why. Being a small operator at another airline's hub is not the whole answer, because Frontier ran above the airport average at Dallas-Fort Worth and Phoenix, both American hubs. What stands out at Atlanta is the timing: Frontier's biggest wave there leaves late in the evening, on aircraft that have already flown all day, and many of those flights head into the congested Northeast. With no spare aircraft on hand, an evening wave full of late aircraft stays late.

The calendar and the week

September was Frontier's best month at 79.6% and July its worst at 64.9%. February 2026, at 78.4%, ran well ahead of the summer. The Atlanta July page shows what summer storms did to the whole airport. One year is one sample; a low-cost carrier's month can swing on a single system-wide disruption.

The summer trough was not shared evenly. Frontier's Denver departures lost about half as much ground between April and July as its Atlanta departures, which fell to their worst month of the year. It is the Denver and Atlanta split again, stretched across the calendar.

This is the file the pipeline writes for Frontier each month, trimmed to its headline fields; every Frontier figure in this guide is recomputed from it.

Wednesday was its best day at 77.0% and Sunday its worst at 69.3%. Monday, at 69.8%, was nearly as weak as Sunday. Both are the return days of a leisure weekend, when Frontier's aircraft are at their fullest.

Flight numbers worth knowing

Frontier's most punctual flights are morning departures into or out of Denver. F9 686, the 7:35am from Denver to Washington National, F9 1733, the 6am from Orlando to Denver, and F9 3156, the 6:30am from Los Angeles to Denver, are among the best in its schedule.

The least punctual leave Atlanta at night. F9 3288, the 9pm from Atlanta to LaGuardia, sits at the bottom, with F9 3097, the 9:15pm to Dallas-Fort Worth, and F9 4602, the 10:40pm to Newark, close by. F9 4401, the evening Las Vegas to San Francisco, shows that the West has bad flights too when they land at SFO. That is not only Frontier: flights into San Francisco fell to roughly 35 to 50% on time on several routes from April to July 2026. When I first saw it I assumed a bug in my aggregation; checked against the raw month files, it is in the data, which does not say why.

How I would fly Frontier

Fly Frontier through Denver, not Atlanta. The same airline, the same aircraft and the same fares produce very different records at the two.

Book the morning, and treat evening flights as a gamble. A late-evening Frontier departure from an eastern airport is among the least reliable things Frontier sells. At 65.0% on time after 8pm, I would not put anything that matters behind one.

Plan for a long delay, not a short one. Frontier's cancellations are ordinary; its delays, once they start, run long. On a trip with a fixed commitment, arrive the day before.

Do not build your own connection onto a Frontier flight. A separate ticket onward is not protected if the first flight runs late, and with delays this long that is a real risk. The connection risk tool shows how much buffer the airport needs. The budget airline guide explains the trade behind the fare.
