Flying to Las Vegas: the routes, the days and the flight home
Flights out of Las Vegas ran 82.4% on time on Saturdays and 71.8% on Fridays. Which routes into Harry Reid run best, and how to time the trip home.

Las Vegas has one airport, and Harry Reid International handled 171,844 departures from September 2025 to August 2026. Most people fly in on a Thursday or Friday and out on a Sunday or Monday. Those are four of the worst days of the week to do it.
The usual Vegas weekend is built on the wrong days. Flights out of Las Vegas ran 71.8% on time on Fridays and 73.4% on Sundays, against 82.4% on Saturdays and 82.6% on Wednesdays.
The Mountain West hubs guide covers Las Vegas as an airport: its desert summer and its daily curve. This guide is about the trip. Which routes into Vegas run on time, which carriers to pick on them, and how to get home.
The routes into Las Vegas, ranked
Sixty-odd routes into Las Vegas have their own page on this site. Among the busy ones, with 2,000 or more flights a year, the order is not what most travellers would guess.

The top of the list is short, calm and western. The Orange County to Las Vegas route ran 82.7% on time, Reno to Las Vegas 81.4% and Burbank to Las Vegas 80.4%. Houston Intercontinental to Las Vegas is the best long route, at 82.8%. Newark and Kennedy, despite the New York airspace, ran close to 78.1%: a four-and-a-half-hour flight has room to recover a late departure.
The bottom is dominated by hubs with bad afternoons. The Dallas-Fort Worth to Las Vegas route ran 68.8% on time, the worst of the busy routes into Vegas. San Francisco to Las Vegas ran 70.2%, Austin 73.6% and O'Hare 72.9%. The busiest route of all, Los Angeles to Las Vegas, ran 75.8% across 8,202 flights, a middling record for a one-hour hop.

This is the file my pipeline writes for the route each month; the Los Angeles to Las Vegas figures in this guide are recomputed from it, including the weekday and hour breakdowns below.
Cancellations are rarely the risk on a Vegas trip. Departures from Las Vegas were cancelled 0.90% of the time, about half the national 1.89%, because the desert almost never closes an airport. The routes into Vegas that do cancel start somewhere with its own problems: 2.41% from Dallas-Fort Worth and 2.82% from Kennedy, against 0.71% from Orange County. For a winter trip from the Northeast or the Midwest, the weather that matters is at home.

The inbound routes share one weekly rhythm. Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday run well; Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday run badly. On the Denver to Las Vegas route, Friday arrivals ran 70.6% on time and Saturday arrivals 81.2%. From Los Angeles the Friday figure was 68.8%.
Saturday is the surprise. It sits between the two peaks of a Vegas weekend, yet it is one of the best days to fly in or out. The reason is the schedule. Saturday had the fewest departures of any day at Las Vegas, and the fewest nationally too, so runways, gates and air traffic control all run with room to spare. Fridays carry the heaviest schedule of the week at Las Vegas and nationally. The best day of the week guide shows the same pattern across the country, and it is sharper in Las Vegas, where leisure demand piles into the weekend: 10.8 points from the best day to the worst, against 8.1 nationally.
A Saturday-to-Tuesday trip beats Thursday-to-Sunday on both legs. Even moving one leg helps, and if I could move only one, it would be the flight in on Friday.
Which airline on the busy routes
The carrier matters more on Vegas routes than the airport pages suggest. Southwest flies the most flights into Las Vegas, and on most of the busiest routes it is not the most punctual option.
On Los Angeles to Las Vegas, United ran well ahead of Southwest on the same route. On San Francisco to Las Vegas and Denver to Las Vegas the same order held. On O'Hare to Las Vegas, United beat American by a wide margin, and from Dallas-Fort Worth the American flights trailed both of the smaller carriers on the route. Southwest's early flights run very well across its network; its later arrivals are likely what drag these route figures down. On these routes I would open the carrier's own route page before booking. The same route, different airline guide explains how to read those comparisons.
The flight home

Departures from Las Vegas ran 76.9% on time, rank 39 of 60 airports. The routes home split by direction, and they are not simply the inbound list reversed: the pipeline keeps each direction of a route as its own record, and the two can differ by ten points. Eastbound flights to hubs did well: Las Vegas to Charlotte ran 87.0%, Las Vegas to Minneapolis 84.7% and Las Vegas to Atlanta 83.8%. Several of those are overnight flights. They leave after the evening peak has cleared and land at a hub at dawn, before its own traffic builds. Flights out of Las Vegas after 8pm ran 72.0% on time, better than the 66.9% of the 5pm to 8pm window. The red-eye guide explains the trade in sleep.
The worst flights home go to California. Las Vegas to San Francisco ran 58.0% on time and Las Vegas to San Diego 62.4%. Both land at airports with little spare arrival capacity: San Francisco's is cut by low cloud, and San Diego runs on a single runway. On Las Vegas to San Francisco, Southwest ran far behind United.

The calendar
Las Vegas departures ran best in January (83.1%) and worst in July (69.6%). The January page and July page show the two ends. The desert summer brings heat that limits aircraft performance and monsoon thunderstorms in the afternoon; the Mountain West guide covers the mechanism. The holidays behaved differently here than in much of the country. Las Vegas was one of the airports that ran better than its normal weeks during Thanksgiving week 2025, when the country as a whole ran 77.8% on time. It fell sharply during the 2025 Christmas and New Year window. Each of these is one year's sample.
How I would time a Vegas trip
Fly in on Saturday or midweek. If the dates are fixed at Thursday to Sunday, take the earliest flight on each leg.
Take the first departure of the day into Las Vegas. On the busiest route, from Los Angeles, flights leaving between 5am and 8am ran 95.3% on time, and they put you in the city by breakfast.
Go home on a red-eye if you are heading east. The overnight flights to Charlotte and Atlanta ran well, and out of Las Vegas the late-night window beat the early evening.
On the busy routes, compare carriers before the fare. United, Delta and SkyWest often beat Southwest and American on the same city pair. The best time to fly tool shows the hour on any route.
Avoid the afternoon flight home to San Francisco or San Diego. Those are the least punctual busy routes out of Las Vegas. At 58.0%, I would not book the last flight of the day to San Francisco if missing it meant a night in Las Vegas I had not planned.
