Historical statistics for March 2026, not live status or a forecast for this year’s March. For today’s conditions at IAD, see live FAA status.

IAD in March lands a B, 4 points better than the national rate of 75.7%. About one flight in five arrives 15 minutes late or worse, and those flights are late by an hour and a half on average. That is a workable record, not a spotless one. That rests on 4,983 flights, of which United Airlines flew 3,306 at 82.4% on time.

These figures cover 4,983 departures from Washington Dulles International in March 2026. On time means an arrival less than 15 minutes after the scheduled gate time, the DOT's threshold, and the national comparison uses every US departure in the same month rather than the whole year.

Against the year

March next to IAD's other months

Against IAD's own year, March ran 2 points worse than the twelve-month rate of 81.1%, which makes it number nine of twelve months, best first. Either side of it, February ran 83.3% on time and April 87.2%, so a trip moved by a few weeks would have landed in a better stretch.

Departure window

The best time of day to leave IAD in March

Departure time matters more here than the choice of carrier. The gap between the best and worst window is 19 points, against 8 points between the best and worst carrier. Each bar is the on-time rate for flights scheduled inside that window.

  • 5am–8am439 flights80.8%
  • 8am–11am1,230 flights90.8%
  • 11am–2pm919 flights79.2%
  • 2pm–5pm359 flights79.5%
  • 5pm–8pm1,363 flights72.1%
  • 8pm–5am673 flights73.8%

Scale runs 65% to 95%. Rows with fewer than 30 flights show a dash.

Book the morning departure. Flights leaving between 8am–11am arrive on time 90.8% of the time, against 72.1% for the evening window. That is 19 points of difference for no extra money, and it comes from the same aircraft having had no earlier flight to fall behind on. The 5pm–8pm window is the busiest, with 1,363 flights scheduled in it.

Across the week, Tuesday is the strongest day at 83.5% on time and Friday the weakest at 71.2%. 12 points is a smaller lever than departure hour, but it is free.

Carrier by carrier

Which airlines ran best at IAD in March

The choice of carrier is not cosmetic here. United Airlines arrives on time 82.4% of the time; Republic Airways manages 74.3%. Sample sizes sit next to every figure, because a two-point gap across 735 flights means less than a ten-point one.

Delay causes

What held IAD up in March

Carriers report a reason for every delay minute they cause, in five DOT categories. The split below is by minutes, not by number of flights, so a handful of very long weather delays weighs as much as many short ones. It covers 91,000 reported delay minutes.

  • Late-arriving aircraft
    34%
  • Carrier
    33%
  • National Airspace System
    29%
  • Extreme weather
    5%
  • Security
    0%

The practical consequence: the 8am–11am departure is the one that starts clean. Its aircraft has no earlier leg to be late from, which is exactly why that window shows 90.8% on time here. The split is drawn from 91,453 reported delay minutes.

Cancellations sit at 1.81% against a national 2.90%, which is ordinary. Diversions add another 0.34%.

For anyone connecting, the number to weigh is not the on-time rate but the tail behind it. 9.2% of arrivals land a full hour or more behind schedule, against 9.5% nationally. A 45-minute layover does not survive that, and no amount of walking quickly changes it. Ninety minutes is the honest minimum here, and two hours if the onward flight is on a separate ticket.
