Against the year
December next to IAD's other months
Against IAD's own year, December ran 6 points worse than the twelve-month rate of 81.1%, which makes it number eleven of twelve months, best first. Cancellations were unusually low for IAD in December, at 0.71% against 1.37% across the year. Either side of it, November ran 81.8% on time and January 83.0%, so a trip moved by a few weeks would have landed in a better stretch.

Departure window
The best time of day to leave IAD in December
Departure time matters more here than the choice of carrier. The gap between the best and worst window is 13 points, against 5 points between the best and worst carrier. Each bar is the on-time rate for flights scheduled inside that window.
- 5am–8am451 flights75.7%
- 8am–11am1,208 flights80.3%
- 11am–2pm890 flights76.6%
- 2pm–5pm272 flights74.5%
- 5pm–8pm1,310 flights67.4%
- 8pm–5am545 flights76.8%
Scale runs 60% to 85%. Rows with fewer than 30 flights show a dash.
Book the morning departure. Flights leaving between 8am–11am arrive on time 80.3% of the time, against 67.4% for the evening window. That is 13 points of difference for no extra money, and it comes from the same aircraft having had no earlier flight to fall behind on. The 5pm–8pm window is the busiest, with 1,310 flights scheduled in it.
Across the week, Wednesday is the strongest day at 85.4% on time and Friday the weakest at 59.0%. 26 points is a smaller lever than departure hour, but it is free.
Carrier by carrier
Which airlines ran best at IAD in December
The two carriers here are closely matched: 5 points separate the best from the worst. At that spread, schedule and price are better tie-breakers than reliability. Sample sizes are shown so you can see which rows are worth weighing.

Delay causes
What held IAD up in December
Carriers report a reason for every delay minute they cause, in five DOT categories. The split below is by minutes, not by number of flights, so a handful of very long weather delays weighs as much as many short ones. It covers 81,000 reported delay minutes.
- 35%Late-arriving aircraft
- 32%Carrier
- 29%National Airspace System
- 4%Extreme weather
- 0%Security
35% of delay minutes trace back to a late-arriving aircraft, meaning the plane was already behind before it got here. That is a cascade, and cascades start small and grow through the day. Across 81,000 reported delay minutes here, that single category outweighs weather by 8 to one. It is the strongest argument for booking the first departure of the morning, when the aircraft has been sitting at the gate overnight with nothing to inherit. The split is drawn from 80,883 reported delay minutes.
Cancellations are rare at 0.71%, below the national 1.55% and low enough to earn the plus on the grade. Roughly one flight in 100 is called off; the risk here is arriving late, not not arriving.
8.2% of arrivals land an hour or more late, close to the national 10.0%. That is the figure that decides a connection, and it says a 60 to 75 minute layover is reasonable here while anything under 45 minutes is a bet. Most delays on this route last a little over an hour, which a normal layover absorbs.
What to do with this
Flying from IAD in December
For a December trip through IAD: plan on this being one of the airport's harder months. The 8am–11am departures held up best at 80.3% on time, and with 8.2% of arrivals an hour or more late, a connection here deserves more slack than the same trip in April would.
