Against the year
April next to IAD's other months
Against IAD's own year, April ran 6 points better than the twelve-month rate of 81.1%, which makes it the best of the twelve months in the data. Cancellations were unusually low for IAD in April, at 0.31% against 1.37% across the year. Either side of it, March ran 79.6% on time and May 84.1%, so a trip moved by a few weeks would have landed in a worse stretch.

Departure window
The best time of day to leave IAD in April
Departure time matters more here than the choice of carrier. The gap between the best and worst window is 13 points, against about a point between the best and worst carrier. Each bar is the on-time rate for flights scheduled inside that window.
- 5am–8am472 flights87.4%
- 8am–11am1,221 flights93.3%
- 11am–2pm850 flights87.7%
- 2pm–5pm318 flights86.3%
- 5pm–8pm1,272 flights80.8%
- 8pm–5am710 flights87.7%
Scale runs 70% to 100%. Rows with fewer than 30 flights show a dash.
Book the morning departure. Flights leaving between 8am–11am arrive on time 93.3% of the time, against 80.8% for the evening window. That is 13 points of difference for no extra money, and it comes from the same aircraft having had no earlier flight to fall behind on. The 5pm–8pm window is the busiest, with 1,272 flights scheduled in it.
Across the week, Tuesday is the strongest day at 90.4% on time and Wednesday the weakest at 84.1%. 6 points is a smaller lever than departure hour, but it is free.
Carrier by carrier
Which airlines ran best at IAD in April
The two carriers here are closely matched: about a point separate the best from the worst. At that spread, schedule and price are better tie-breakers than reliability. Sample sizes are shown so you can see which rows are worth weighing.

Delay causes
What held IAD up in April
Carriers report a reason for every delay minute they cause, in five DOT categories. The split below is by minutes, not by number of flights, so a handful of very long weather delays weighs as much as many short ones. It covers 43,000 reported delay minutes.
- 38%Carrier
- 30%Late-arriving aircraft
- 30%National Airspace System
- 2%Extreme weather
- 0%Security
The largest share of delay minutes, 38%, falls under carrier control: crew scheduling, maintenance, fuelling, baggage. Unlike weather, that is a management outcome, and it is the category where the gap between two carriers on the same schedule is genuinely earned. It accounts for 16,000 of the 43,000 delay minutes reported here. The split is drawn from 43,470 reported delay minutes.
Cancellations are rare at 0.31%, below the national 0.90% and low enough to earn the plus on the grade. Roughly one flight in 100 is called off; the risk here is arriving late, not not arriving.
Badly late arrivals are rare here: only 4.2% land an hour or more behind schedule, against 6.4% nationally. Connections built on this flight are about as safe as US domestic connections get, though a cancelled flight still ignores every layover you give it.
