Milwaukee as a Chicago alternative: MKE against O'Hare and Midway
Milwaukee ran 78.1% on time over September 2025 to August 2026, against 70.8% at O'Hare and 74.2% at Midway. It wins on punctuality, not on cancellations or choice.

Every flight from Milwaukee Mitchell to O'Hare covers 67 miles, and over September 2025 to August 2026 it was one of the least reliable short-haul routes in the country: 68.4% on time, 4.38% cancelled, rank 2,778 of 2,978. It is also Milwaukee's busiest route by a wide margin. Anyone weighing Milwaukee as a way around Chicago's airports should start there.
The case for MKE is strongest when it avoids Chicago entirely.
The headline favours Milwaukee. Milwaukee (MKE) ran 78.1% on time, rank 30 of the 60 airports on this site. Chicago O'Hare (ORD) ran 70.8%, rank 59, and Chicago Midway (MDW) 74.2%, rank 54. The O'Hare against Midway guide covers the Chicago pair; this one asks whether driving north is worth it.

Punctual, but it cancels
Milwaukee's weakness is cancellations. It scrubbed 2.41% of its scheduled departures, below O'Hare's 2.80% but well above Midway's 1.52% and the national 1.89%. When its flights ran late, they ran long: an average of 81 minutes, against 79 at O'Hare and 57 at Midway. 8.1% of Milwaukee departures arrived an hour or more late, between Midway's 7.6% and O'Hare's 12.1%.
The biggest single contributor is one airline on one route. SkyWest, flying United and American regional jets, runs about a quarter of Milwaukee's departures, most of them the O'Hare shuttle, and it was the least punctual carrier at the airport, cancelling several times as often as Southwest.

SkyWest at Milwaukee sits at the bottom of that table. Southwest at Milwaukee, the largest carrier, ran above the airport average and cancelled far less, and Delta led the field. The cause codes show SkyWest's mark: the airline's own causes account for 43% of Milwaukee's delay minutes, against 33% nationally, and late-arriving aircraft only 29%. A short feeder into a congested hub, flown by a contract carrier that has to fit its aircraft around the hub's banks, produces exactly that mix. SkyWest's national record is better than its Milwaukee one. The regional carriers guide explains how a United or American ticket ends up on a SkyWest aircraft, which matters here: the brand on the booking says little about who flies the leg or how it runs.
The two directions of a route are separate records in the data, and here the return leg is worse. O'Hare to Milwaukee ran 64.3% on time and 17.3% of its flights arrived an hour or more late, one of the highest hour-late shares of any busy route in the country. A 67-mile flight that lands an hour late has lost more time than the drive would have taken. I would drive to O'Hare before I would fly the shuttle to it. The worst single flight number from Milwaukee was an evening shuttle, SkyWest 5648, at around half on time; the best were Delta's Atlanta departures, Delta 2999 mid-morning and Delta 1221 at dawn.

On every destination that all three airports serve at scale, the Milwaukee flight ran on time more often. Milwaukee to Atlanta ran 88.5%, rank 116 of 2,978 routes, against 74.1% for O'Hare to Atlanta and 78.7% for Midway to Atlanta. Milwaukee to Baltimore ran 84.7% against 72.3% from O'Hare; Milwaukee to Las Vegas 81.0% against 72.9%; Milwaukee to Minneapolis 83.0% against 69.9%.
The New York case shows the catch. Milwaukee to LaGuardia ran 81.1% on time, far ahead of O'Hare to LaGuardia at 66.6%, but it cancelled 7.49% of its flights, the most of any big route from Milwaukee, and it did not fly at all in part of the year. It is a single regional operation into a slot-controlled airport. O'Hare's version is worse on time, but with dozens of flights a day there is always a later one.
That is the structural trade. Milwaukee has nonstop service at scale to a couple of dozen airports. O'Hare has it to more than a hundred, Midway to around sixty. If your destination is on Milwaukee's list, Milwaukee is very likely the more punctual departure. If it is not, a Milwaukee trip becomes a connection, often through O'Hare on the 67-mile shuttle, which puts the weakest route in the region at the front of your itinerary.

Milwaukee's curve is flatter than either Chicago airport's. Before 8am it ran 86.3%, below Midway's 89.7% dawn figure, largely because the shuttle's morning departures to O'Hare are already exposed to O'Hare's first-bank congestion. Between 5pm and 8pm it ran 66.6%, ahead of O'Hare's 61.1% and Midway's 63.7%. The evening is where Milwaukee earns its reputation, and it schedules almost nothing after 8pm, the window that drags both Chicago airports down. Southwest at Milwaukee follows the usual Southwest shape, excellent at dawn and weak by evening.
The months tell a winter story. Milwaukee's worst month was December 2025 at 70.1%, O'Hare's was the same month at 61.0%, while Midway's worst was June 2026 at 64.2%. In summer Milwaukee was the clear winner: July 2026 at MKE ran 76.5% against 71.4% at O'Hare and 69.1% at Midway. March 2026 brought Milwaukee's worst cancellation rate of the year, and O'Hare's spiked the same month: the weather that closes Chicago closes Milwaukee too. The winter storm guide covers that season.
Weekdays barely move the needle at MKE: its best day, Tuesday, ran 81.1%, its worst, Sunday, 74.1%.
My call on driving north
Fly from Milwaukee when it has your nonstop. Atlanta, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Nashville and Denver all ran better from MKE than from either Chicago airport. For a trip from the northern suburbs, that can be worth the drive.
Do not route through O'Hare from Milwaukee. The shuttle is Milwaukee's weakest link, and at 68.4% on time I would not put a connection behind it. If you are connecting through Chicago anyway, driving to O'Hare removes the least reliable leg, and if you need a hub, Delta's Atlanta flights from MKE were among the most punctual routes in the region.
For New York, weigh cancellation above punctuality. Milwaukee's LaGuardia and Newark flights were punctual when they operated and cancelled often. With a hard deadline, Chicago's frequency is worth more.
In winter, Milwaukee is not an escape from Chicago weather. The same storms cancel flights at both. In summer, when Chicago's problem is congestion and thunderstorms, Milwaukee's advantage is at its largest. Test any connection in the connection risk tool.
