Chicago: O'Hare against Midway, by the numbers
Chicago O'Hare International runs 70.8% on time and Chicago Midway International 75.6%. The smaller airport wins on paper. Whether it wins for your trip is a different question.

Chicago is the clearest natural experiment in US aviation: two airports, one weather system, eleven miles apart, run on completely different models. Over June 2025 to May 2026, Chicago O'Hare International arrived on time 70.8% of the time. Chicago Midway International managed 75.6%.
Cancellations tell the same story from a different angle: 2.48% against 1.41%.
Why the smaller airport does better
O'Hare is built for connections. Aircraft arrive in banks, passengers transfer, aircraft depart in banks. That design maximises the number of city pairs reachable in one stop and minimises the spare capacity available when anything goes wrong. When demand sits close to runway capacity for most of the operating day, a single ground stop is still being paid off six hours later.
Midway is built for point-to-point flying, dominated by one carrier running a schedule it controls end to end. Shorter taxi times, no arrival bank to queue behind, and a field that does not saturate the way its neighbour does.
That is the whole mechanism. It is not that one airport is managed better; they are solving different problems.
Where the advantage disappears
Three situations reverse the comparison, and all three are common.
When the smaller airport adds a connection. O'Hare reaches several hundred destinations non-stop. Midway reaches a fraction of that. Saving fifteen minutes of taxi time is a poor trade against inserting a connection, which is the single most expensive reliability decision in any itinerary.
When something goes wrong. O'Hare has spare aircraft, reserve crews, maintenance on site, and half a dozen carriers who might take you. A cancelled flight there is a bad afternoon. At a field with fewer daily departures on your route, it can be tomorrow. The cancellation rate says how often; frequency of service says what it costs.
In winter. Both airports sit under the same storm. Neither escapes it. This is the case where airport choice buys nothing at all, and the only variable that helps is the date.
The seasonal pattern is worth checking
Chicago's difficult months are not the national ones. Both fields carry a winter-weighted delay profile, where most days are ordinary and a handful shut the region down. That shape means an annual average describes neither the typical day nor the bad one.
If your dates are fixed, read the monthly strip on each airport's page rather than the headline figure. If your dates are flexible, late September through early November is as reliable as Chicago gets.
Practical reading
Take the non-stop, from whichever field offers one. If both do, and the ground journey is comparable, the smaller airport is the better bet on the numbers.
If you are connecting onward, weight the hour-or-more-late share rather than the headline: 11.8% at O'Hare against 7.2% at Midway. That figure decides whether a 60-minute layover holds.
And take a morning departure from either. The daily decay is real at both fields, and it is steeper at the busier one.
The hour, and why it matters more at the bigger field
Nationally the 5am–8am window runs 89.3% on time against 67.7% for 5pm–8pm. At a banked hub the decay through the day is steeper than that national average, because each bank inherits the delay of the one before it. At a point-to-point field it is shallower.
So the comparison people should be making is not O'Hare against Midway, but the 7am from O'Hare against the 7am from Midway, and separately the 6pm from each. Compare the same hour at both fields on their own pages before concluding anything. The gap at dawn is usually far smaller than the gap at dinner time.
Frequency, worked through
Two airports post similar cancellation rates. Your carrier flies your route eight times a day from one and three times from the other. Those are not the same product.
On the eight-a-day route a cancellation is a three-hour delay: there is another aircraft, and probably an empty seat on it. On the three-a-day route the same event can mean tomorrow, because the remaining departures are sold and the airline has nothing to move you to.
This is the single most useful check you can do by hand before booking, it takes two minutes on any booking site, and it is not in the DOT data anywhere.
What the comparison does not settle
Ground journey. From most of the North Side, O'Hare is the closer field; from most of the South Side, Midway is. An extra forty minutes each way is not repaid by a few points of on-time rate, and travellers consistently underestimate the difference at rush hour.
Aircraft type also differs between the two fields in ways that affect winter operations. Neither of those appears in an arrival figure, and both matter on the day.
If you are connecting rather than starting here
The comparison reverses. O'Hare exists to move connecting passengers and does it at a scale Midway cannot approach: more carriers, more daily frequencies, more alternatives when your inbound arrives late.
A connection at the busier field with a 90-minute layover is a better bet than a 45-minute connection at the quieter one, because what protects a connection is not the airport's average punctuality but the number of aircraft leaving for your destination after the one you missed.
So read the two figures for different questions. Starting your journey in Chicago: the smaller field's record is the relevant one. Passing through Chicago: depth of schedule beats it.
