Departure window

The best time of day to leave PDX in July

Departure time matters more here than the choice of carrier. The gap between the best and worst window is 16 points, against 15 points between the best and worst carrier. Each bar is the on-time rate for flights scheduled inside that window.

  • 5am–8am1,255 flights85.6%
  • 8am–11am960 flights78.5%
  • 11am–2pm914 flights73.3%
  • 2pm–5pm891 flights74.2%
  • 5pm–8pm978 flights69.5%
  • 8pm–5am866 flights69.2%

Scale runs 60% to 90%. Rows with fewer than 30 flights show a dash.

Book the early departure. Flights leaving between 5am–8am arrive on time 85.6% of the time, against 69.2% for the overnight window. That is 16 points of difference for no extra money, and it comes from the same aircraft having had no earlier flight to fall behind on. The 5am–8am window is the busiest, with 1,255 flights scheduled in it.

Across the week, Saturday is the strongest day at 81.2% on time and Monday the weakest at 70.0%. 11 points is a smaller lever than departure hour, but it is free.

Carrier by carrier

Which airlines ran best at PDX in July

The choice of carrier is not cosmetic here. SkyWest Airlines arrives on time 81.9% of the time; Southwest Airlines manages 67.3%. Sample sizes sit next to every figure, because a two-point gap across 928 flights means less than a ten-point one.

Delay causes

What held PDX up in July

Carriers report a reason for every delay minute they cause, in five DOT categories. The split below is by minutes, not by number of flights, so a handful of very long weather delays weighs as much as many short ones. It covers 91,000 reported delay minutes.

  • Late-arriving aircraft
    41%
  • Carrier
    37%
  • National Airspace System
    21%
  • Extreme weather
    1%
  • Security
    0%

41% of delay minutes trace back to a late-arriving aircraft, meaning the plane was already behind before it got here. That is a cascade, and cascades start small and grow through the day. Across 91,000 reported delay minutes here, that single category outweighs weather by 41 to one. It is the strongest argument for booking the first departure of the morning, when the aircraft has been sitting at the gate overnight with nothing to inherit. The split is drawn from 91,211 reported delay minutes.

Cancellations sit at 1.18% against a national 2.45%, which is ordinary. Diversions add another 0.53%.

7.2% of arrivals land an hour or more late, close to the national 12.1%. That is the figure that decides a connection, and it says a 60 to 75 minute layover is reasonable here while anything under 45 minutes is a bet. Most delays on this route last about an hour, which a normal layover absorbs.

What to do with this

Flying from PDX in July

For a July trip through PDX: plan on this being one of the airport's harder months. The 5am–8am departures held up best at 85.6% on time, and with 7.2% of arrivals an hour or more late, a connection here deserves more slack than the same trip in February would.
