Departure window
The best time of day to leave PDX in June
Departure time matters more here than the choice of carrier. The gap between the best and worst window is 17 points, against 23 points between the best and worst carrier. Each bar is the on-time rate for flights scheduled inside that window.
- 5am–8am1,371 flights89.4%
- 8am–11am1,060 flights81.9%
- 11am–2pm891 flights77.9%
- 2pm–5pm865 flights77.2%
- 5pm–8pm879 flights72.3%
- 8pm–5am958 flights77.8%
Scale runs 65% to 95%. Rows with fewer than 30 flights show a dash.
Book the early departure. Flights leaving between 5am–8am arrive on time 89.4% of the time, against 72.3% for the evening window. That is 17 points of difference for no extra money, and it comes from the same aircraft having had no earlier flight to fall behind on. The 5am–8am window is the busiest, with 1,371 flights scheduled in it.
Across the week, Tuesday is the strongest day at 85.7% on time and Thursday the weakest at 76.9%. 9 points is a smaller lever than departure hour, but it is free.
Carrier by carrier
Which airlines ran best at PDX in June
The choice of carrier is not cosmetic here. Delta Air Lines arrives on time 87.8% of the time; Southwest Airlines manages 64.7%. Sample sizes sit next to every figure, because a two-point gap across 843 flights means less than a ten-point one.
| Airline | Flights | On time | Avg delay | Cancelled | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alaska Airlines | 2,200 | 83.7% | 45 min | 0.36% | B+ |

| JetBlue Airwaysthin sample | 41 | 70.7% | 56 min | 0.00% | C+ |
American Airlines cancels 3.3% of what it schedules here, the highest in the table. A cancelled flight never appears in an on-time rate, so read that column alongside the punctuality one rather than after it.

Delay causes
What held PDX up in June
One category carries most of the weight here. Late-arriving aircraft accounts for 44% of the 76,000 delay minutes carriers reported, and the remaining four split what is left. The split is by minutes rather than by flights, so a few very long delays count for as much as many short ones.
- 44%Late-arriving aircraft
- 35%Carrier
- 20%National Airspace System
- 1%Extreme weather
- 0%Security
44% of delay minutes trace back to a late-arriving aircraft, meaning the plane was already behind before it got here. That is a cascade, and cascades start small and grow through the day. Across 76,000 reported delay minutes here, that single category outweighs weather by 43 to one. It is the strongest argument for booking the first departure of the morning, when the aircraft has been sitting at the gate overnight with nothing to inherit. The split is drawn from 76,427 reported delay minutes.
Cancellations are rare at 0.61%, below the national 1.65% and low enough to earn the plus on the grade. Roughly one flight in 100 is called off; the risk here is arriving late, not not arriving.
5.6% of arrivals land an hour or more late, close to the national 9.7%. That is the figure that decides a connection, and it says a 60 to 75 minute layover is reasonable here while anything under 45 minutes is a bet. Most delays on this route last about an hour, which a normal layover absorbs.
What to do with this
Flying from PDX in June
For a June trip through PDX: plan on this being one of the airport's harder months. The 5am–8am departures held up best at 89.4% on time, and with 5.6% of arrivals an hour or more late, a connection here deserves more slack than the same trip in February would.
