Departure window
The best time of day to leave LAX in July
Departure time matters more here than the choice of carrier. The gap between the best and worst window is 18 points, against 28 points between the best and worst carrier. Each bar is the on-time rate for flights scheduled inside that window.
- 5am–8am2,246 flights90.5%
- 8am–11am4,044 flights81.2%
- 11am–2pm2,620 flights74.1%
- 2pm–5pm2,354 flights72.4%
- 5pm–8pm2,601 flights74.4%
- 8pm–5am3,239 flights73.2%
Scale runs 65% to 95%. Rows with fewer than 30 flights show a dash.
Book the early departure. Flights leaving between 5am–8am arrive on time 90.5% of the time, against 72.4% for the afternoon window. That is 18 points of difference for no extra money, and it comes from the same aircraft having had no earlier flight to fall behind on. The 8am–11am window is the busiest, with 4,044 flights scheduled in it.
Across the week, Saturday is the strongest day at 82.9% on time and Sunday the weakest at 73.8%. 9 points is a smaller lever than departure hour, but it is free.
Carrier by carrier
Which airlines ran best at LAX in July
The choice of carrier is not cosmetic here. SkyWest Airlines arrives on time 85.4% of the time; Frontier Airlines manages 57.4%. Sample sizes sit next to every figure, because a two-point gap across 426 flights means less than a ten-point one.

Delay causes
What held LAX up in July
Carriers report a reason for every delay minute they cause, in five DOT categories. The split below is by minutes, not by number of flights, so a handful of very long weather delays weighs as much as many short ones. It covers 293,000 reported delay minutes.
- 40%Late-arriving aircraft
- 37%Carrier
- 21%National Airspace System
- 1%Extreme weather
- 0%Security
40% of delay minutes trace back to a late-arriving aircraft, meaning the plane was already behind before it got here. That is a cascade, and cascades start small and grow through the day. Across 293,000 reported delay minutes here, that single category outweighs weather by 28 to one. It is the strongest argument for booking the first departure of the morning, when the aircraft has been sitting at the gate overnight with nothing to inherit. The split is drawn from 292,511 reported delay minutes.
Cancellations sit at 1.20% against a national 2.45%, which is ordinary. Diversions add another 0.56%.
8.9% of arrivals land an hour or more late, close to the national 12.1%. That is the figure that decides a connection, and it says a 60 to 75 minute layover is reasonable here while anything under 45 minutes is a bet. Most delays on this route last a little over an hour, which a normal layover absorbs.
What to do with this
Flying from LAX in July
For a July trip through LAX: plan on this being one of the airport's harder months. The 5am–8am departures held up best at 90.5% on time, and with 8.9% of arrivals an hour or more late, a connection here deserves more slack than the same trip in September would.
