Historical statistics for July 2025, not live status or a forecast for this year’s July. For today’s conditions at JFK, see live FAA status.
JFK in July carries a cancellation problem, not just a delay problem: 6.2% of scheduled flights never operate, against 2.5% nationally. Of the ones that do fly, about two flights in three arrive on time, worth a C− overall. The punctuality figure counts only flights that actually departed, so it flatters an operation that cancels this often. That rests on 9,262 flights, of which American Airlines flew 1,234 at 75.2% on time.
American Airlines is the most reliable of the four carriers covered here at 75.2% on time across 1,234 flights.

These figures cover 9,262 departures from John F. Kennedy International in July 2025. On time means an arrival less than 15 minutes after the scheduled gate time, the DOT's threshold, and the national comparison uses every US departure in the same month rather than the whole year.
Against the year
July next to JFK's other months
Against JFK's own year, July ran 8 points worse than the twelve-month rate of 75.7%, which makes it number eleven of twelve months, best first. Cancellations are where July stands out: 6.23% of scheduled departures were called off, 2.0 times the airport's rate across the year.

Departure window
The best time of day to leave JFK in July
Departure time matters more here than the choice of carrier. The gap between the best and worst window is 39 points, against 14 points between the best and worst carrier. Each bar is the on-time rate for flights scheduled inside that window.
- 5am–8am1,411 flights86.8%
- 8am–11am1,608 flights80.8%
- 11am–2pm1,451 flights74.9%
- 2pm–5pm1,647 flights64.0%
- 5pm–8pm1,537 flights51.6%
- 8pm–5am1,608 flights47.9%
Scale runs 40% to 90%. Rows with fewer than 30 flights show a dash.
The 8pm–5am window is where this operation falls apart: 47.9% on time, against 86.8% for the 5am–8am slot. By evening the aircraft flying these rotations have absorbed a full day of small delays and there is no slack left to recover in. The 2pm–5pm window is the busiest, with 1,647 flights scheduled in it.
Across the week, Saturday is the strongest day at 72.6% on time and Sunday the weakest at 60.3%. 12 points is a smaller lever than departure hour, but it is free.
Carrier by carrier
Which airlines ran best at JFK in July
The choice of carrier is not cosmetic here. American Airlines arrives on time 75.2% of the time; JetBlue Airways manages 61.1%. Sample sizes sit next to every figure, because a two-point gap across 3,365 flights means less than a ten-point one.
| Airline | Flights | On time | Avg delay | Cancelled | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| JetBlue Airways | 3,365 | 61.1% | 91 min | 7.90% | D− |
| Delta Air Lines | 2,673 | 72.5% | 90 min | 3.48% | C− |

| Hawaiian Airlinesthin sample | 31 | 83.9% | 36 min | 0.00% | B+ |
Republic Airways cancels 10.8% of what it schedules here, the highest in the table. A cancelled flight never appears in an on-time rate, so read that column alongside the punctuality one rather than after it.

Delay causes
What held JFK up in July
Carriers report a reason for every delay minute they cause, in five DOT categories. The split below is by minutes, not by number of flights, so a handful of very long weather delays weighs as much as many short ones. It covers 252,000 reported delay minutes.
- 39%Late-arriving aircraft
- 30%Carrier
- 26%National Airspace System
- 5%Extreme weather
- 0%Security
39% of delay minutes trace back to a late-arriving aircraft, meaning the plane was already behind before it got here. That is a cascade, and cascades start small and grow through the day. Across 252,000 reported delay minutes here, that single category outweighs weather by 8 to one. It is the strongest argument for booking the first departure of the morning, when the aircraft has been sitting at the gate overnight with nothing to inherit. The split is drawn from 252,116 reported delay minutes.
Cancellations run at 6.23%, against 2.45% nationally. That is about one flight in fifteen cancelled outright. A cancelled flight is invisible in every on-time figure on this page, so the punctuality numbers above describe only the flights that actually operated.
For anyone connecting, the number to weigh is not the on-time rate but the tail behind it. 16.1% of arrivals land a full hour or more behind schedule, against 12.1% nationally. A 45-minute layover does not survive that, and no amount of walking quickly changes it. Ninety minutes is the honest minimum here, and two hours if the onward flight is on a separate ticket.
What to do with this
Flying from JFK in July
For a July trip through JFK: plan on this being one of the airport's harder months. The 5am–8am departures held up best at 86.8% on time, and with 16.1% of arrivals an hour or more late, a connection here deserves more slack than the same trip in May would.
