Against the year
August next to TPA's other months
Against TPA's own year, August ran 4 points worse than the twelve-month rate of 78.1%, which makes it number eleven of twelve months, best first. Cancellations were unusually low for TPA in August, at 0.70% against 1.54% across the year. Either side of it, July ran 69.2% on time and September 87.1%, so a trip moved by a few weeks would have landed in a better stretch.

Departure window
The best time of day to leave TPA in August
Departure time matters more here than the choice of carrier. The gap between the best and worst window is 29 points, against 11 points between the best and worst carrier. Each bar is the on-time rate for flights scheduled inside that window.
- 5am–8am1,413 flights90.9%
- 8am–11am1,117 flights79.1%
- 11am–2pm1,108 flights76.2%
- 2pm–5pm891 flights64.2%
- 5pm–8pm1,118 flights62.0%
- 8pm–5am524 flights62.1%
Scale runs 55% to 95%. Rows with fewer than 30 flights show a dash.
The 5pm–8pm window is where this operation falls apart: 62.0% on time, against 90.9% for the 5am–8am slot. By evening the aircraft flying these rotations have absorbed a full day of small delays and there is no slack left to recover in. The 5am–8am window is the busiest, with 1,413 flights scheduled in it.
Across the week, Tuesday is the strongest day at 86.4% on time and Sunday the weakest at 65.8%. 21 points is a smaller lever than departure hour, but it is free.
Carrier by carrier
Which airlines ran best at TPA in August
The choice of carrier is not cosmetic here. Delta Air Lines arrives on time 79.9% of the time; American Airlines manages 68.6%. Sample sizes sit next to every figure, because a two-point gap across 1,122 flights means less than a ten-point one.
| Airline | Flights | On time | Avg delay | Cancelled | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Southwest Airlines | 1,705 | 76.9% | 57 min | 0.29% | B+ |
| American Airlines | 1,122 | 68.6% | 96 min | 1.52% | C |

| United Airlines | 656 | 72.9% | 74 min | 0.30% | C+ |
| Frontier Airlines | 578 | 71.1% | 67 min | 1.04% | C |
| JetBlue Airways | 469 | 72.3% | 81 min | 0.64% | C+ |

| Envoy Airthin sample | 73 | 78.1% | 85 min | 0.00% | B+ |
Delta leads American by 11 points. Real, but small enough that a better departure time on the weaker carrier can outweigh it.

Delay causes
What held TPA up in August
One category carries most of the weight here. Late-arriving aircraft accounts for 50% of the 112,000 delay minutes carriers reported, and the remaining four split what is left. The split is by minutes rather than by flights, so a few very long delays count for as much as many short ones.
- 50%Late-arriving aircraft
- 22%National Airspace System
- 21%Carrier
- 7%Extreme weather
- 0%Security
50% of delay minutes trace back to a late-arriving aircraft, meaning the plane was already behind before it got here. That is a cascade, and cascades start small and grow through the day. Across 112,000 reported delay minutes here, that single category outweighs weather by 7 to one. It is the strongest argument for booking the first departure of the morning, when the aircraft has been sitting at the gate overnight with nothing to inherit. The split is drawn from 112,252 reported delay minutes.
Cancellations are rare at 0.70%, below the national 1.08% and low enough to earn the plus on the grade. Roughly one flight in 100 is called off; the risk here is arriving late, not not arriving.
For anyone connecting, the number to weigh is not the on-time rate but the tail behind it. 9.7% of arrivals land a full hour or more behind schedule, against 8.2% nationally. A 45-minute layover does not survive that, and no amount of walking quickly changes it. Ninety minutes is the honest minimum here, and two hours if the onward flight is on a separate ticket.
What to do with this
Flying from TPA in August
For a August trip through TPA: plan on this being one of the airport's harder months. The 5am–8am departures held up best at 90.9% on time, and with 9.7% of arrivals an hour or more late, a connection here deserves more slack than the same trip in September would.
