Historical statistics for March 2026, not live status or a forecast for this year’s March. For today’s conditions at IND, see live FAA status.

IND in March lands a B, about a point better than the national rate of 75.7%. About one flight in four arrives 15 minutes late or worse, and those flights are late by an hour and a half on average. That is a workable record, not a spotless one. That rests on 4,362 flights, of which American Airlines flew 519 at 82.1% on time.

American Airlines is the most reliable of the three carriers covered here at 82.1% on time across 519 flights.

These figures cover 4,362 departures from Indianapolis International in March 2026. On time means an arrival less than 15 minutes after the scheduled gate time, the DOT's threshold, and the national comparison uses every US departure in the same month rather than the whole year.

Against the year

March next to IND's other months

Against IND's own year, March ran 4 points worse than the twelve-month rate of 80.2%, which makes it number ten of twelve months, best first. Either side of it, February ran 83.3% on time and April 83.0%, so a trip moved by a few weeks would have landed in a better stretch.

Departure window

The best time of day to leave IND in March

Departure time matters more here than the choice of carrier. The gap between the best and worst window is 25 points, against 6 points between the best and worst carrier. Each bar is the on-time rate for flights scheduled inside that window.

  • 5am–8am1,147 flights86.2%
  • 8am–11am633 flights80.9%
  • 11am–2pm716 flights79.1%
  • 2pm–5pm754 flights74.5%
  • 5pm–8pm787 flights65.7%
  • 8pm–5am325 flights61.0%

Scale runs 55% to 90%. Rows with fewer than 30 flights show a dash.

The 8pm–5am window is where this operation falls apart: 61.0% on time, against 86.2% for the 5am–8am slot. By evening the aircraft flying these rotations have absorbed a full day of small delays and there is no slack left to recover in. The 5am–8am window is the busiest, with 1,147 flights scheduled in it.

Across the week, Thursday is the strongest day at 80.3% on time and Monday the weakest at 69.2%. 11 points is a smaller lever than departure hour, but it is free.

The three carriers here are closely matched: 6 points separate the best from the worst. At that spread, schedule and price are better tie-breakers than reliability. Sample sizes are shown so you can see which rows are worth weighing.

Delay causes

What held IND up in March

Carriers report a reason for every delay minute they cause, in five DOT categories. The split below is by minutes, not by number of flights, so a handful of very long weather delays weighs as much as many short ones. It covers 86,000 reported delay minutes.

  • Late-arriving aircraft
    34%
  • National Airspace System
    31%
  • Carrier
    28%
  • Extreme weather
    7%
  • Security
    0%

The practical consequence: the 5am–8am departure is the one that starts clean. Its aircraft has no earlier leg to be late from, which is exactly why that window shows 86.2% on time here. The split is drawn from 85,636 reported delay minutes.

Cancellations run at 2.57%, against 2.90% nationally. That is about one flight in 40 cancelled outright. A cancelled flight is invisible in every on-time figure on this page, so the punctuality numbers above describe only the flights that actually operated.

For anyone connecting, the number to weigh is not the on-time rate but the tail behind it. 9.0% of arrivals land a full hour or more behind schedule, against 9.5% nationally. A 45-minute layover does not survive that, and no amount of walking quickly changes it. Ninety minutes is the honest minimum here, and two hours if the onward flight is on a separate ticket.

What to do with this

Flying from IND in March

For a March trip through IND: plan on this being one of the airport's harder months. The 5am–8am departures held up best at 86.2% on time, and with 9.0% of arrivals an hour or more late, a connection here deserves more slack than the same trip in September would.
