Miami or Fort Lauderdale: the South Florida airport trade

Miami International runs 73.4% on time and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International 71.4%. Twenty-five miles apart, one weather system, two different operations.

Miami and Fort Lauderdale sit twenty-five miles apart under the same sky, and travellers treat them as interchangeable. The records differ. Over June 2025 to May 2026: Miami International 73.4% on time, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International 71.4%.

Cancellations: 1.69% against 2.21%.

Two different businesses

Miami is a connecting hub with heavy international traffic, banked schedules and long stage lengths. Fort Lauderdale is dominated by point-to-point leisure flying on low-cost carriers, with tighter aircraft utilisation and thinner recovery capacity when something breaks.

Those models fail differently. A hub absorbs a bad morning by rebooking across a deep schedule. A point-to-point operation with a thirty-minute turn target and few spare aircraft does not, which is the mechanism described in the budget carrier guide.

The consequence: the two airports can post similar delay figures and deliver very different outcomes when a day goes wrong.

Seasonality is the dominant variable in this market

South Florida's calendar is unlike the national one, and reading the national monthly pattern here will mislead you.

Late summer through early autumn carries hurricane exposure. A named storm does not delay flights; it stops them, for two or three days, across every carrier and both airports at once. That risk does not appear in an on-time rate at all. It appears in the cancellation column, and only in the months it lands.

Winter is peak leisure season: full aircraft, no spare seats, and a cancellation that cannot be rebooked same-day because every flight south is sold out. The delay figures in February may look ordinary while the cost of landing in the wrong tail of them is at its annual maximum.

Read the twelve-month strip on each airport's page rather than the annual average. In this market more than most, the average describes no actual month.

Choosing

Non-stop beats everything. If only one field has it, that is the answer.

For a connection, compare the tail: 9.9% of Miami arrivals land an hour or more late against 11.2% at Fort Lauderdale. That decides whether a 60-minute layover holds.

For a trip with a hard deadline in hurricane season, weight cancellation rate above everything and build a spare day into the plan. No airport choice substitutes for that.

For a winter leisure trip, check how many daily departures your carrier runs on the route. Frequency is your recovery capacity, and it is not in any of these figures.

Palm Beach also serves the region and is smaller than both. Its figures move around more year to year, so treat any number for it with the caution a thinner sample deserves.

Frequency matters more here than the delay figures

South Florida runs on leisure demand, which means full aircraft for much of the year and very little slack in the system.

That changes what a cancellation costs. On a route flown six times daily in a shoulder month, it is a three-hour delay. On the same route in February, with every southbound flight sold out, it can be two days. The cancellation rate is identical in both cases; the consequence is not.

Before booking, count your carrier's daily departures on the specific route, and check whether a competing carrier flies it too. Two airlines flying a route four times each is structurally safer than one airline flying it eight times, because a problem that grounds one operation rarely grounds both.

The hour, in a convective market

Nationally the 5am–8am window runs 89.3% on time against 67.7% for 5pm–8pm. South Florida deepens that curve for half the year: afternoon convection builds almost daily from late spring through early autumn, and it lands squarely on the weakest window.

From roughly May to October the morning departure is worth considerably more than the national average suggests. From November to April the curve flattens, and the hour matters less than the date.

What the figures do not capture at all

Hurricane risk does not appear in an on-time rate, and only partly in a cancellation rate. A named storm does not degrade the operation; it stops it, across every carrier and both airports, for two or three days. Then it produces a rebooking backlog that takes several more days to clear.

No airport choice, carrier choice or departure time addresses that. The only defences are the calendar, a spare day in the plan, and travel insurance that covers weather. This site's figures will tell you which airport runs better on an ordinary day; they cannot tell you which one is open next Tuesday.

The international factor at the bigger field

Miami's schedule carries far more international traffic than Fort Lauderdale's, and that shapes its domestic figures in a way worth knowing.

International banks concentrate arrivals and departures into narrow windows, and domestic flights scheduled around them inherit the congestion. It also means longer average stage lengths, which carry more scheduled padding and flatter an arrival figure independently of how well the airport runs.

The clean comparison is therefore the same destination from both fields, on their own pages, rather than the two headline averages. Where both serve a route, that is the number to use.

One more asymmetry: arrivals into South Florida in winter face a different problem from departures. Inbound aircraft come from the north, where the weather is, so a Miami arrival can be delayed by a storm nowhere near Miami. The airport's own figures capture that, which is part of why they read the way they do.
