Why the first flight of the morning is statistically safest
39% of US delay minutes are charged to an aircraft that was already late when it arrived. The first departure of the day is the only one with no inbound flight to inherit from.

The single largest category in the DOT's delay reporting is not weather, and it is not the airline. It is "late-arriving aircraft", at 39% of all reported delay minutes nationally.
That category means one thing: the plane was already behind schedule before it reached your gate. Which makes the first flight of the day structurally different from every other flight, because it is the only one with no previous leg to inherit.
What the aircraft did before you got on it
A narrowbody in US domestic service typically flies four to six legs a day, turning in thirty-five to fifty minutes between them. That ground time covers deplaning, cleaning, catering, fuelling, bag transfer, boarding and pushback.
It is enough time when everything runs. It has almost no margin. A late inbound, a slow bag load, or a gate occupied by another aircraft eats the entire buffer immediately, and the airline cannot get it back on the next turn either, because that turn is also thirty-five minutes.
So delays do not stay the size they started. A twelve-minute delay on the first leg becomes twenty on the second and forty-five by the fourth, and the fourth leg is the 6pm departure. This is why the national on-time curve falls smoothly through the day rather than jumping around: it is one aircraft's morning, propagating.
The first departure escapes all of it. That aircraft sat at the gate overnight. Crew reported fresh. Cleaning and catering happened in the small hours with hours of slack. Nothing upstream exists to go wrong.
What the numbers say
Nationally, departures in the 5am–8am window arrive on time 89.3% of the time. Departures in the 5pm–8pm window manage 67.7%. That is 21.6 percentage points.
On individual routes the effect is often larger, particularly at congested airports where the day's accumulated delay has nowhere to drain. Three things reinforce the advantage beyond the cascade itself.
Airspace is emptier at 6am. Departure queues at hub airports are short before the first arrival bank lands.
Convective weather has not built yet. Summer thunderstorms in the Southeast and Midwest form through the afternoon and peak between 3pm and 8pm. A 7am departure is usually gone before they exist.
And if the early flight does fail, there is a whole day of alternatives behind it. A cancelled 7am on a route flown six times daily is an inconvenience. A cancelled 8pm on the same route is a hotel.
Where it does not help much
The advice is not universal, and the honest version has limits.
On thin routes flown once or twice a day, the first departure may be the only departure, and there is no cascade to escape because there is no earlier leg for anyone. The rate is set by the aircraft's overnight position rather than by the time of day.
At airports that never saturate, the whole curve is flat. If the spread between the best and worst window on your route is two points, getting up at 4am buys you two points.
And the first flight is not immune to weather that has been sitting on the field since midnight, or to a maintenance problem discovered at 5am with no spare aircraft on the property.
The real cost
The trade is genuine and worth stating plainly. A 6am departure means a 4am alarm, and for many trips that is worse than a modest chance of arriving late.
Where it clearly pays: connecting itineraries, trips with a fixed commitment at the other end, travel in July and August when the afternoon convective risk is highest, and any route where the site's own hour-block chart shows a spread of eight points or more.
Where it clearly does not: a short non-stop with a flexible arrival, on a route whose chart is flat, in October.

Not every early flight is a first flight
The advice is about the aircraft's day, not the clock, and those come apart more often than you would think.
An aircraft that overnighted at your airport starts clean. One that arrived at 1am as the last leg of a long day, then turns at 6am, has already absorbed whatever went wrong yesterday and had only a few hours of maintenance and crew rest to shed it. The second one departs at the same time and carries none of the advantage.
You cannot see this on a booking page. What you can see is the pattern in aggregate, which is what the hour-block chart on every page here measures: across hundreds of departures in that window, the mix of overnighted and positioned aircraft averages out into the number shown.
A useful proxy: at a carrier's own hub, the early departures are overwhelmingly aircraft that spent the night there, because that is where the airline keeps them. At a spoke station served twice a day, the early flight is often the aircraft that limped in the night before. This is one more reason the same carrier posts better figures at its hub than at its outstations.
