Departure window
The best time of day to leave SFO in June
Departure time matters more here than the choice of carrier. The gap between the best and worst window is 36 points, against 39 points between the best and worst carrier. Each bar is the on-time rate for flights scheduled inside that window.
- 5am–8am1,511 flights92.8%
- 8am–11am3,121 flights73.7%
- 11am–2pm1,867 flights57.4%
- 2pm–5pm2,314 flights57.0%
- 5pm–8pm1,755 flights65.7%
- 8pm–5am2,847 flights61.4%
Scale runs 50% to 100%. Rows with fewer than 30 flights show a dash.
Book the early departure. Flights leaving between 5am–8am arrive on time 92.8% of the time, against 57.0% for the afternoon window. That is 36 points of difference for no extra money, and it comes from the same aircraft having had no earlier flight to fall behind on. The 8am–11am window is the busiest, with 3,121 flights scheduled in it.
Across the week, Saturday is the strongest day at 77.8% on time and Thursday the weakest at 60.1%. 18 points is a smaller lever than departure hour, but it is free.
Carrier by carrier
Which airlines ran best at SFO in June
The choice of carrier is not cosmetic here. United Airlines arrives on time 74.8% of the time; Southwest Airlines manages 36.1%. Sample sizes sit next to every figure, because a two-point gap across 954 flights means less than a ten-point one.
| Airline | Flights | On time | Avg delay | Cancelled | Grade |

| Frontier Airlines | 391 | 57.4% | 88 min | 3.32% | D− |
Frontier Airlines cancels 3.3% of what it schedules here, the highest in the table. A cancelled flight never appears in an on-time rate, so read that column alongside the punctuality one rather than after it.

Delay causes
What held SFO up in June
One category carries most of the weight here. Late-arriving aircraft accounts for 52% of the 291,000 delay minutes carriers reported, and the remaining four split what is left. The split is by minutes rather than by flights, so a few very long delays count for as much as many short ones.
- 52%Late-arriving aircraft
- 25%Carrier
- 22%National Airspace System
- 2%Extreme weather
- 0%Security
52% of delay minutes trace back to a late-arriving aircraft, meaning the plane was already behind before it got here. That is a cascade, and cascades start small and grow through the day. Across 291,000 reported delay minutes here, that single category outweighs weather by 22 to one. It is the strongest argument for booking the first departure of the morning, when the aircraft has been sitting at the gate overnight with nothing to inherit. The split is drawn from 290,938 reported delay minutes.
Cancellations are rare at 0.70%, below the national 1.65% and low enough to earn the plus on the grade. Roughly one flight in 100 is called off; the risk here is arriving late, not not arriving.
For anyone connecting, the number to weigh is not the on-time rate but the tail behind it. 11.4% of arrivals land a full hour or more behind schedule, against 9.7% nationally. A 45-minute layover does not survive that, and no amount of walking quickly changes it. Ninety minutes is the honest minimum here, and two hours if the onward flight is on a separate ticket.
What to do with this
Flying from SFO in June
For a June trip through SFO: plan on this being one of the airport's harder months. The 5am–8am departures held up best at 92.8% on time, and with 11.4% of arrivals an hour or more late, a connection here deserves more slack than the same trip in March would.
