SAT in July lands a B, 5 points better than the national rate of 71.1%. About one flight in four arrives 15 minutes late or worse, and those flights are late by a little over an hour on average. That is a workable record, not a spotless one. That rests on 3,699 flights, of which Delta Air Lines flew 609 at 79.7% on time.
Delta Air Lines is the most reliable of the four carriers covered here at 79.7% on time across 609 flights.

July next to SAT's other months
Against SAT's own year, July ran 5 points worse than the twelve-month rate of 81.8%, which makes it number eleven of twelve months, best first.

Departure window
The best time of day to leave SAT in July
Departure time matters more here than the choice of carrier. The gap between the best and worst window is 36 points, against 8 points between the best and worst carrier. Each bar is the on-time rate for flights scheduled inside that window.
- 5am–8am1,059 flights91.8%
- 8am–11am492 flights84.1%
- 11am–2pm682 flights78.3%
- 2pm–5pm669 flights66.5%
- 5pm–8pm560 flights55.4%
- 8pm–5am237 flights63.5%
Scale runs 45% to 95%. Rows with fewer than 30 flights show a dash.
The 5pm–8pm window is where this operation falls apart: 55.4% on time, against 91.8% for the 5am–8am slot. By evening the aircraft flying these rotations have absorbed a full day of small delays and there is no slack left to recover in. The 5am–8am window is the busiest, with 1,059 flights scheduled in it.
Across the week, Friday is the strongest day at 79.8% on time and Sunday the weakest at 72.0%. 8 points is a smaller lever than departure hour, but it is free.
Carrier by carrier
Which airlines ran best at SAT in July
The choice of carrier is not cosmetic here. Delta Air Lines arrives on time 79.7% of the time; American Airlines manages 71.4%. Sample sizes sit next to every figure, because a two-point gap across 658 flights means less than a ten-point one.
| Airline | Flights | On time | Avg delay | Cancelled | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Southwest Airlines | 1,438 | 77.4% | 62 min | 0.70% | B+ |

| Frontier Airlinesthin sample | 52 | 65.3% | 73 min | 3.85% | C− |
American Airlines cancels 4.0% of what it schedules here, the highest in the table. A cancelled flight never appears in an on-time rate, so read that column alongside the punctuality one rather than after it.

Delay causes
What held SAT up in July
One category carries most of the weight here. Late-arriving aircraft accounts for 45% of the 66,000 delay minutes carriers reported, and the remaining four split what is left. The split is by minutes rather than by flights, so a few very long delays count for as much as many short ones.
- 45%Late-arriving aircraft
- 30%Carrier
- 21%National Airspace System
- 4%Extreme weather
45% of delay minutes trace back to a late-arriving aircraft, meaning the plane was already behind before it got here. That is a cascade, and cascades start small and grow through the day. Across 66,000 reported delay minutes here, that single category outweighs weather by 10 to one. It is the strongest argument for booking the first departure of the morning, when the aircraft has been sitting at the gate overnight with nothing to inherit. The split is drawn from 65,838 reported delay minutes.
Cancellations sit at 1.49% against a national 2.45%, which is ordinary. Diversions add another 0.51%.
For anyone connecting, the number to weigh is not the on-time rate but the tail behind it. 9.2% of arrivals land a full hour or more behind schedule, against 12.1% nationally. A 45-minute layover does not survive that, and no amount of walking quickly changes it. Ninety minutes is the honest minimum here, and two hours if the onward flight is on a separate ticket.
What to do with this
Flying from SAT in July
For a July trip through SAT: plan on this being one of the airport's harder months. The 5am–8am departures held up best at 91.8% on time, and with 9.2% of arrivals an hour or more late, a connection here deserves more slack than the same trip in February would.
