Delta, United, American: the three big networks compared

Delta Air Lines runs 80.9% on time, United Airlines 78.9%, American Airlines 74.2%. The gap is real and smaller than it looks.

Over June 2025 to May 2026: Delta Air Lines arrived on time 80.9% of the time, United Airlines 78.9%, American Airlines 74.2%. Cancellations run 1.67%, 1.01% and 2.28% respectively.

Those gaps are worth something. They are also smaller than the national ranking makes them look, and the reason is where each airline chose to build.

Geography is doing part of the work

A carrier's national average is the weighted average of its hubs. Hubs are not equally difficult.

An airline concentrated in Salt Lake City, Minneapolis and Detroit is flying in structurally easier airspace than one concentrated in Newark, San Francisco and Chicago. The second airline could run an identical operation and still post a worse number, because 21% of national delay minutes are charged to airspace and volume constraints that no carrier controls.

This is the single largest confounder in any airline comparison, and it is never adjusted for in the rankings you see quoted.

The comparison that survives

Same route, same months, same weather, same airspace. Two carriers flying identical city pairs face identical constraints, so a gap between them is earned.

That is the table at the top of every route page on this site, and the gaps there are consistently narrower than the national ranking suggests. The airline-at-airport pages do the same job for a whole field: every carrier at one airport, ranked, with the confounder removed.

Use those before using the national figures. The national number tells you about a network; you are buying a flight.

Where the differences are real

Three things genuinely separate these operations, and all three show up in the carrier-controlled delay category rather than in weather or airspace.

Schedule padding discipline. How much ground time each turn is given, and whether the schedule is built to survive an ordinary bad morning.

Recovery resources. Spare aircraft and reserve crews positioned where problems happen. This is expensive and it is the clearest difference between a well-run and a thinly-run network.

Cancellation policy. Whether the airline cancels early and decisively to protect the rest of the day, or flies through and delivers rolling delays. Both are defensible; they produce very different-looking statistics, which is why the cancellation column has to be read alongside the punctuality one.

What none of the three figures tell you

Nothing about the passenger. The DOT data records what the aircraft did: it has no record of whether a delay was announced four hours ahead or discovered at the gate, whether rebooking took two hours or two days, or whether anyone was compensated.

It also says nothing about seats, fees, loyalty value or how the airline behaves when things go wrong, which for many travellers decides the booking regardless of punctuality.

How to use this

If you are choosing between the three on a specific route, open that route's page and read the comparison table. That is the answer.

If you are choosing where to concentrate loyalty, the airline-at-airport page for your home field matters more than any national figure, because that is where most of your flying will start.

And read the cancellation column with the same weight as the on-time one. A network that is punctual when it flies but cancels more has not earned the better grade, which is exactly why the grade on this site carries a modifier driven by cancellations.

Reading the cancellation column properly

The three carriers make genuinely different choices about when to cancel, and those choices move the punctuality figures in ways that are easy to misread.

An operation that cancels early on a bad-weather morning removes its most-likely-to-be-late flights from the on-time calculation entirely. Its published punctuality improves. Whether passengers are better off depends on what happened to the rebooking, which the data does not record.

An operation that flies through the same morning keeps those flights in the calculation, posts a worse punctuality figure, and may have delivered its passengers later or earlier than the first airline depending entirely on how the rebooking went.

Neither approach is dishonest and neither is obviously better. What is unsafe is comparing two carriers on punctuality alone when their cancellation rates differ, because you are comparing two different denominators.

Hub concentration cuts both ways

A carrier that dominates one airport usually performs well there and worse at fields where it is a minor tenant, and the national average blends the two.

That has a straightforward implication for anyone deciding where to put their loyalty. The relevant number is not the airline's national figure but its figure at the airport you actually fly from, because that is where most of your flying will start and where the airline's recovery resources either are or are not positioned.

The airline-at-airport pages on this site exist to answer exactly that question, and the answer is frequently several points away from the national headline in either direction.

One caveat about all three figures. Each blends mainline flying with flights operated by regional partners under the mainline's brand, and those partners file their own records. A network whose short sectors are heavily outsourced can post a mainline figure that its own passengers rarely experience. What would change this ranking

Worth naming, because a league table presented without its failure modes invites more confidence than it deserves.

A carrier restructuring its hub portfolio changes its national average without changing how well it operates, because the average is weighted by where it flies. A large new regional contract does the same in the opposite direction. And a single severe winter affecting one carrier's hub geography more than another's can move the annual figures by more than the operational gap between them.

The figures here are recomputed monthly from the raw filings, so they follow all of that automatically. What they cannot do is tell you which part of a year-on-year change was operational and which was structural. For that, compare the same carriers at the same airport across periods rather than comparing national headlines.
